  • Who is the Combined course designed for?
The Combined course is perfect for students looking for a more tailored approach to their learning. It focuses on addressing specific topics and personalized needs, making it ideal for those who want to improve in targeted areas of the language. In contrast, the Intensive Plus course offers a more experiential learning approach, providing opportunities to explore the city and immerse yourself in its culture while advancing your Spanish skills. Students who choose the Combined course will receive a questionnaire in their confirmation email to provide details about what they would like to study in their private classes. This information is extremely helpful for the academic coordination team to better tailor the lessons to their goals.
  • Which course is best for complete beginners who want to learn quickly?
For complete beginners looking to learn Spanish rapidly, the Intensive Explore or Intensive Plus courses are the best choices. These programs provide a dynamic mix of lessons and immersive experiences to accelerate language acquisition. However, if they prefer a more personalized approach to focus on specific needs, the Combined course would be ideal.
  • Can you provide an example of a weekly schedule?
Here’s an example of what a typical weekly schedule might look like for an Intensive course at Expanish:
  • Can students start on Tuesday instead of Monday?
Yes, your students can join a group on Tuesday if they are unable to start on Monday. However, please note that the Monday class will not be made up, and the price remains the same. They will also miss the new student orientation, but our staff will provide an abbreviated version on Tuesday upon arrival. Please advise that students should arrive at 9:30 am on Tuesday. As we do not have early staff available for registrations or level tests, this may result in students entering class slightly late if they need to complete registration, payment, or a level test.
  • Can my students join the group on Wednesday if they cannot arrive earlier?
Group classes start on Mondays, so it is not possible for students to join mid-week, as this could be challenging for them and disrupt the other students. We recommend that your students take a few private lessons during their first week and then join the group the following Monday. Alternatively, they can participate in our activities during that first week to meet other students and then start the group lessons on the next Monday.
  • What are the differences between the group courses at Expanish?
Expanish offers three group course options, each designed to fit different learning goals and levels of immersion: Intensive 20 Lessons/Week Rapidly enhance your language proficiency! Lessons Breakdown: ✓ 16 General Spanish ✓ 2 Project Sessions ✓ 2 Spanish in Action Intensive Explore 24 Lessons/Week Boost your language skills by immersing yourself in city life! Lessons Breakdown: ✓ 16 General Spanish ✓ 2 Project Sessions ✓ 2 Spanish in Action ✓ 4 Spanish in the City Intensive Plus 30 Lessons/Week The complete immersive experience to accelerate your Spanish learning! Lessons Breakdown: ✓ 20 General Spanish (extra 4 classes compared to G20) ✓ 2 Project Sessions ✓ 2 Spanish in Action ✓ 4 Spanish in the City ✓ 2 Conversation
  • Can my students take Spanish for business purposes? Do you offer Medical Spanish? What about Spanish for teachers?
Yes! The content of private lessons can be tailored to the specific needs of your students. This means we can incorporate business Spanish, medical Spanish, or other specialized content into their lessons.
  • Can my students take private lessons at night?
Only Barcelona (BCN) - Due to the popularity of our Evening Group Course, we do not have available classroom space for private lessons at night. The latest we can offer private lessons is at 6:30 pm.
  • Can my students start the evening course after the start date?
It is usually fine for students to start in the second class of a module, but starting any later is not recommended as missed classes will not be made up, and the price remains the same. For students who will miss more than the first 2 classes, we recommend waiting for the next month’s start date. In this case, students must complete their online Spanish test (written and oral) before the start date to reserve their spot in the appropriate level.
  • Can a student attend the course for example from March 1st to March 15th and receive a discounted rate due to travel?
The Evening Group Course is structured in monthly modules, so students need to book the entire month to secure their spot. Unfortunately, we cannot provide discounts for partial attendance. If a student can only attend for half a month, it may be more cost-effective for them to wait until they return from their trip to start the course, allowing them to participate in the full module. Alternatively, we recommend considering intensive day courses, which are available on a weekly basis, or private lessons, which are offered by the hour and offer greater flexibility.
  • General Spanish - Is the teaching approach more theoretical or practical?
The approach is communicative and will be carried out in the most practical way, always considering that for this, it will be necessary to work on grammatical tools, functional lexical structures, etc., to achieve this communicative goal.
  • Project Sessions - How are the projects selected? Do students have any input in choosing the project topics?
The projects will be chosen considering the syllabus, the grammatical content being worked on, and the themes associated with this content. Our syllabi are designed based on the syllabus of our Aula Plus textbooks, where communicative resources are linked to grammatical and lexical resources and a theme. Examples: In unit 3 of our A1 textbook, the grammatical resource focuses on the uses of hay and the verb estar, while the communicative resource is the description of places. A project here would be "Creating a contest about countries." In unit 5 of our B1 textbook, the grammatical resource focuses on the form and use of imperatives, while the communicative resource involves describing an advertisement. A project here would be "Participating as a jury member in the 'El Ojo de Iberoamérica' advertising festival," where the students will be given guidelines on the roles they will play and the activities they should perform.
  • Project Sessions - Are the projects collaborative?
Yes, it’s a cooperative task, but there are different dynamics. Within these projects, there may be individual or group tasks, but they usually culminate in an open class with the participation of the entire group.
  • Project Sessions - How long do the projects last, and is there a final presentation involved?
They are scheduled to last two class sessions, and at the end of each task, there is always a group presentation/final task.
  • Spanish in Action - What kinds of activities are conducted outside the classroom? For instance, during a visit to a bakery, are students expected to make a purchase, or is it purely observational?
The goal of the "Spanish in Action" activities is to take advantage of the immersion context our students are in and practice with locals in a practical way the structures and content learned in class. Examples: In A1 level, students work on clothing items. A "Spanish in Action" activity might be: "Going shopping at a clothing store and choosing an outfit for a classmate." The objective of this activity is to practice the verbs preferir (to prefer), gustar (to like), and demonstratives, as well as colors, clothing items, and adjectives. I'll add the activity dynamics here for you to see an example: Activity Description: First part: Students form pairs and receive the first part of the worksheet. Here, they interview their partner and note down their preferences. Second part: We leave the school and go to the H&M store. There, the pairs separate, and each student looks for a complete outfit that their partner might like. As they find the pieces of the outfit, they take pictures of them so they can show the rest of the class during the final discussion and justify their choices. Final discussion: We return to the classroom or find a quiet space for the group, so the students can show their respective partners the outfit they created. In the open class, they can justify their decisions, for example: "For Peter, I chose this shirt because his favorite color is…"
  • Spanish in Action - Are these activities suitable for all language levels? How is the difficulty adjusted for beginners versus advanced learners?
The activities are designed to be appropriate for the level, and the activity is adjusted for each level. Example of a B2 level activity: there is content in the book that deals with the timeline of a city, and we’ve designed a group activity where students must create the timeline of the Gracia neighborhood.
  • Spanish in Action - Are these outside-the-classroom activities conducted in small groups or larger groups?
The whole group goes out, but usually, different groups are formed to do a task with a final discussion. This also depends on the activity and the number of students. In July, for example, they did a photography contest in Eixample with the objective of later doing descriptions in class, and since there were 16 students, they formed groups of 4.
  • Spanish in the City - Are the visits to neighborhoods and museums guided by the teachers, or are local guides involved?
In principle, they are guided by teachers who have been carefully selected for this activity. For example, if we do an urban art activity in Barcelona, the teacher guiding the activity will be knowledgeable in this subject. In any case, we will create all the materials and provide training so that all teachers are well-prepared.
  • Spanish in the City - Do these activities include opportunities for students to interact with local residents?
Yes, in the activities, we plan tasks where students have to interact with locals. For example, in the Barcelona Literaria module, there are questions related to the book La Catedral del Mar, near the Santa Maria del Mar Basilica.
  • Spanish in the City - Are there any additional costs associated with these visits, such as museum entrance fees or transportation?
Yes, if there is an entry fee for a museum or transportation costs, the student would have to pay. We will select places with low costs, if any payment is required.
  • Conversation Sessions - Who chooses the conversation topics—students or teachers? Can students suggest topics that interest them?
Initially, we will select a range of topics suitable for the students' level. The idea is to have a variety, so there will always be topics that interest everyone.
  • Conversation Sessions - Do these sessions involve group discussions or debates?
Yes, this also varies a lot depending on the level, but different dynamics will be used to encourage debates in small groups or open class discussions.
  • Conversation Sessions - What would a typical weekly schedule look like?
  • Conversation Sessions - How are students evaluated throughout the course?
Student evaluation at Expanish is done through continuous assessment, which includes class participation, attendance, and progress through activities. If a teacher notices that a student is progressing faster or facing difficulties, they will have a conversation with the student to propose solutions, such as moving to a higher level, offering additional support, or finding a more suitable group. At the end of each completed level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2), there is a final exam for that level, which serves as both a check and a self-assessment for the students. If a student is not ready to take the final exam and pass it, the teacher will address this beforehand, ensuring that all students who reach the final exam are adequately prepared and have made the most of their learning experience.
  • How is the course completion certificate provided?
Students receive a course completion certificate in PDF format via email the week following their last day of class when they have achieved a 80% attendance record. The certificate includes the Spanish level achieved, number of class hours, and period of stay. Additional documentation can be provided upon request.
  • Is the certificate an official certificate that my students can use for university or work?
Expanish is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, meaning our certificates are recognized by the Spanish government (in Argentina as well). However, for official verification of their Spanish level for university or work, some students may need to take an official exam, such as the DELE or SIELE. Expanish can help students prepare for these exams.
  • Can a student take the DELE exam at Expanish?
Expanish is currently a testing center only at our Madrid location. In Barcelona, while we do not host the exam, we can assist students with the registration process and guide them to local testing centers.
  • What is the teaching methodology at Expanish?
Expanish uses the communicative method, where students learn through practical use of the language rather than rote memorization of grammar or completing worksheets. Spanish is the only language used in class. Our teaching approach is grounded in experiential learning, which is supported by key methodological principles: Learning activities should engage students in collaborative strategies, encourage meaningful language use, and present challenges to foster interest (Fernández-Corbacho, 2014). Students acquire knowledge through their own experiences and moments of reflection while using the language. This happens through activities that allow them to experience real-life situations in a practical context (Lara Velarde, 2017). Experiential learning helps students connect authentically with the language by simulating real-world situations, fostering autonomy, and encouraging active participation (Boggu and Sundarsingh, 2016). The experiential learning process follows four stages: feeling, observing, thinking, and doing (Kolb, 1984).
  • What qualifications do Expanish teachers have?
All Expanish teachers are native Spanish speakers with at least a university degree and a certificate to teach Spanish as a foreign language.
  • What are the key details about the group courses?
Intensive Course Start Dates: Every Monday throughout the year. Lesson Duration: Each lesson is 50 minutes. Class Size: Maximum of 12 students. (16 in BCN and BUE) Minimum Age for Group Classes: 16 years old. First Day Arrival Times: 8:00 am for students who have not completed the online level test. 8:45 am for students who have already completed the online level test.
  • Can students use English in class? Is it possible for them to learn Spanish with another language translation?
In our regular group classes, we conduct lessons exclusively in Spanish to provide an immersive experience for all students. Given that our classes include participants from various countries—such as the United States, China, Brazil, and Russia—Spanish is the shared language. If a student requires instruction in a specific language, this can be arranged through private lessons. In these private sessions, teachers can adapt the content and use translations according to the student's needs. Please let us know if such arrangements are needed so we can facilitate this accordingly.
  • A student wants to learn Spanish from Spain because they will be looking for a job after their time in Argentina. How can this be accommodated?
In our Buenos Aires location, the primary focus is on Argentinian Spanish, so students will experience Argentinian accents and local expressions. However, we do integrate vocabulary and variations from other Spanish-speaking countries into our lessons. If a student prefers to learn Spanish as spoken in Spain or another specific country, we can arrange this in private lessons. In these sessions, the teacher can customize the content to align with the student's preferences and goals. Please let us know if this is the case so we can make the necessary arrangements.
  • How long will it take for a student to learn Spanish?
The time it takes for a student to learn Spanish varies depending on what they consider "speaking" the language. Generally, we find that students who reach a B2 level (high intermediate) are able to communicate and understand effectively in most situations. This is also the level required by many universities for studying in Spanish. For a student starting as a complete beginner, it typically takes around 24 weeks (or 6 months) of intensive courses to reach the B2 level.
  • What Spanish levels does Expanish offer?
Expanish follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and offers 6 different levels: A1: 4 weeks A2: 4 weeks B1: 8 weeks B2: 8 weeks C1: 10 weeks C2: 10 weeks These timeframes are based on our intensive course (20 hours/week). If the student chooses the evening course, it will take longer to complete the levels.
  • How long is the complete Spanish course at Expanish?
The full course consists of 44 weeks of content, covering all 6 levels.
